  • 12 July: ‘Save Water Day’ observed by West Bengal government.

On 12 July 2019, West Bengal government observed Save Water Day across the state to spread the message of water conservation. This is the 1st time the day was observed. From now onwards it will be observed in state each year to create awareness among people to check misuse of water.

About ‘Save Water Day

On occasion of day West Bengal’s Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and eminent persons of different fields including writers, actors and directors of Bengali film and theatre industry and sports personalities, school students took part in Padayatra in Kolkata.

It was also observed in Districts and Blocks of State.

Padayatra: was undertaken in Kolkata which began from Jorashanko Thakurbari and ended at base of Gandhi Statue in city. All present took pledge for conservation of water was also taken on occasion.On occasion of day Chief Minister urged prople to-

  • Save water and save life.
  • Come forward for joining such social programme

Take precautionary measures to save natural resource as water scarcity has become a major issue in world.

Steps Taken for Water Conservation in State

Since 2011, programme of digging ponds is being undertaken throughout state for conservation of water. About 3 lakhs ponds have been dug till now to deal with water scarcity.

State has water conservation programme: Jal dharo Jal bharo (Collect water, store water). To prevent floods and provide water during the period of scarcity, many check dams have been constructed and irrigation canals have been rejuvenated.

From now on state government would observe a Student Day to disseminate message of conservoing water in every sphere of society.

  • SBI Managing Director Anshula Kant appointed World Bank’s MD and CFO.

Anshula Kant, Managing Director of State Bank of India (SBI) has been appointed as Managing Director and Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of World Bank. She will be the 1st woman CFO of World Bank. Her appointment was announced by David Malpass, World Bank’s President.

Key Highlights

Since September 2018 she has been a Managing Director and member of the World Bank Board.

Role as CFO: While functioning her role as MD and CFO, Anshula Kant will be responsible for financial and risk management of World Bank Group and will report WB’s President.

Duties: Among other key management duties, her work will include risk management and oversight of financial reporting. She will also work closely with World Bank CEO on mobilization of International Development Association (IDA) and other financial resources. IDA is a member of World Bank Group. It is an international financial institution that offers concessional loans and grants to world’s poorest developing countries.

  • Kharchi Puja Festival being celebrated in Tripura.

The annual festival of worship of 14 Gods, popularly known as Kharchi Puja is being celebrated in Tripura. It started at Chaturdash Devata Bari in old Agartala (Puran Agartala). The festival began on 10 July will continue till 16 July 2019.

According to an agreement signed with Royal family of Tripura, the Tripura government has been bearing all the expenses of the festival for the last several decades.

About Kharchi Puja

It is one of the most popular festivals in Tripura and is celebrated at Puran Agartala in temple premises of 14 gods.The word Kharchi is derived from word ‘Khya’ which means earth thus Kharchi Puja is basically done to worship earth.It’s a week-long royal Puja which falls in month of July on 8th day of new moon and attracts thousands of people.

The Puja celebrations extend till a week and are held in temple premises which are attended by thousands of devotees.All of rituals during puja are of tribal origin, which includes worshipping of 14 gods and mother earth.Puja is performed for seven consecutive days to wash out sins and to clean post menstrual phase of mother earth’s menstruation.

On day of Puja, 14 gods are carried to Saidra river by members of chantai where gods are bathed in holy water and are brought back to temple.An important part of this festival includes animal sacrifice of goats and pigeons.
